The Tyranny of the Urgent
Since the fall the tyranny of the urgent has kept mankind in its iron grip, stripped from their primary identity as lovers of God. As we race through the business of life the voice of the Lord still echos through the corridors of history all the way from the garden of Eden to the 21st century: Martha, Martha, where are you?
Adam was the first to till the ground overgrown with thorns and thistles. While modern farming equipment has done much to ease the job tending our hearts has continued to be a complicated matter. It is so easy for the cares of this life, the deceitfulness of riches and the pleasures of this life to choke the word of God in our hearts so that it becomes unfruitful. Paradoxically, fruitfulness in the kingdom does not start with doing more but with doing less.
I invite you to join me this advent as I sketch the journey of the anxious and troubled heart finding rest at the feet of Christ. For 24 days I will unpack simple truths contained in the episode of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 in form of bite-sized devotionals. Mary's lifestyle is not the luxury of the few who have nothing else to do but sitting idly. It is the invitation to anyone who truly desires to live life from a flowing heart.
